Do you want to take a course online? It's easy, convenient to schedule, and affordable!
However there is a lot of confusion over online CPR and First Aid courses. All American Heart Association
courses have a practical skills component to them. The online course alone will not lead to certification
or issuance of an American Heart Association CPR or First Aid Card. This is in bold because it
is important. In fact since this is confusing I'll even repeat it, the online course alone will not lead to
certification or issuance of an American Heart Association CPR or First Aid Card.
The American Heart Association offers several courses online at
www.onlineaha.org. However at this time the only online course I can offer and that is authorized
by my AHA Training Center is the BLS for Healthcare Providers Online Course. I do offer all classroom
courses for all other AHA courses.
For Healthcare Providers you must have a valid Healthcare Provider (or ARC Professional Rescuer) card in order
to practice. Most clinical locations and licensing boards require this. Online courses with no practical skills
component are not recognized in many locations. If you are thinking about taking an online course check
with your employer, clinical site, or school to see if the online course meets their requirements.
In late 2008 the American Heart Association changed its BLS for Healthcare Providers Online Renewal
Course to become a stand alone BLS for Healthcare Providers Course and added an additional part to complete
the course. The BLS for Healthcare Providers Course now has 3 parts; Part 1 - online course and exam, Part 2 -
Skills Session, and Part 3 - Skills Test.
BLS Online Part 1
Part 1 is an e-course. This covers all the materials in the BLS for Healthcare Providers book and includes
an electronic exam. Once you complete the online course you must print off your course completion
certificate and bring that with you to take Part 2 and Part 3. You have 60 days after completing Part 1 to
take Parts 2 & 3.
If you do not bring a copy of your course completion certificate you cannot participate in Part 2 and cannot
take Part 3. This is important. You must have your certificate.
Please note: You should contact an AHA Instructor or Coastal CPR & First Aid, LLC prior to taking
Part 1 to make sure there is an instructor available to provide Parts 2 & 3 for you.
Part 1 is available online at www.onlineaha.org. You pay for
Part 1 directly on the AHA website.
BLS Online Part 2
Part 2 is a skills session. This is when you will practice on a mannequin and review all the skills that were
discussed in Part 1. The format of this session may vary from instructor to instructor, but the American Heart
Association requires that instructors plan on a minumum of 30 minutes per student for Parts 2 & 3. Some
instructors may schedule each student individually or cover the skills review as a group. The material may be
demonstrated or portions of the DVD course may be played to demonstrate the skills. Either way each
student must have sufficient hands on time with the mannequin to become comfortable with the skills.
Skills covered should include:
- One person Adult CPR
- Two person Adult CPR
- Use of an AED
- Use of a Bag Valve Mask System
- Use of Barrier Devices
- One person Infant CPR
- Two person Infant CPR
The American Heart Association requires Part 3 - Skills Testing, to immediately follow Part 2 - Skills Session.
For scheduling purposes please plan on at least 30 minutes for Part 2. Coastal CPR & First Aid, LLC will
plan for a minimum of 30 minutes to cover all the material. For group skills review an hour or more may be
scheduled depending upon the size of the group. The cost for Part 2 is paid directly
to the AHA Instructor.
BLS Online Part 3
Part 3 is skills testing. The skills testing session will cover a variety of skills which includes, but is not
limited to:
- One person Adult CPR using a Barrier Device
- Two person Adult CPR using a Bag Valve Mask System
- Integration of an AED into a two person CPR scenario
- One person Infant CPR using a Barrier Device
- Two person Infant CPR using a Bag Valve Mask System
Part 3 can take anywhere from 15-20 minutes to complete. I usually schedule students at 30 minute
intervals when arranging a Skills Testing session. This allows each student ample time to move through each
skills validation test without worry.
The charge for both Parts 2 and Part 3 is paid directly to the AHA Instructor. Currently the charge
by Coastal CPR & First Aid, LLC is $25.
If you have any questions on the BLS for Healthcare Providers Online Course Part 2 & Part 3 please
contact us at info@coastalcpr.com. It is recommended you
contact either us or an AHA Instructor prior to taking the online course Part 1 to make sure that there
is an instructor available to provide Part 2 & Part 3.
